I went to a conference in February for writing, I won’t bore you with the all the minor details of it but there was an author/publisher there, Dean Wesley Smith. He did a lecture on what he calls “Writing into the Dark”. It’s what most people call pantser writing, someone who does not create an outline. Anyway not my point here.
He says there are two brains, the creative brain and the critical brain. For an author the creative brain is obvious and the critical brain is the editor in us. Well he says that the creative brain is like a two year old. They do what they want when they want and don’t care what people think. So the best thing to do is just let the two year old run around. For me, being a punster, this is usually not a problem, but as of late that creative brain, that darn two year old is like a drunkin’ vagabond that won’t do anything useful. You see part of the problem is that my computer has a lot of shiny things on it. As does Netflix. So much so that I got a warning that I have used 90% of my bandwidth this month. That’s a lot of Friends! (I love Friends!!) Not the first time this has happened either. When I discovered Jane the Virgin I watched two seasons of 20+ episodes in less than a week. Then we won’t even mention Outlander! I watched the first two seasons at least five times. In a Row! Oh then the video games! Don’t get me started on the video games. Computer mostly, some Facebook games but Sims2 that’s my jam. Don’t even say sims3 to me, I choose not to acknowledge that version. I could spend hours in Sims2, I’m a benevolent god, I give them everything they could ever desire. Or at least most of the time. I enjoy building cities in Sim City, and I conquer lands in Age of Empires. Yes I am extremely old school. Now see I can’t even wrangle the two year old long enough to tell you that I can’t wrangle the two year old! Jeeze Whiz! There was no real reason for me to tell you all this other than the fact that I’m struggling a bit with the new book and I needed some time away from the whole idea of it. I suppose that should be my queue. Perhaps the two year old will be willing to get a few words in before bed. Wish me luck!
